What Is Solid Hardwood?

Solid hardwood is exactly what it sounds like — a single piece of wood milled to a standard thickness (typically ¾"). It can be sanded and refinished many times over its lifetime, making it a true multi-generational flooring choice. Solid hardwood must be nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor and should only be installed above grade (not in basements or on concrete slabs without a wood subfloor).

What Is Engineered Hardwood?

Engineered hardwood is a real wood product — a solid hardwood veneer (the "wear layer") bonded to a core of cross-ply plywood or HDF. The cross-ply construction makes it dramatically more stable than solid hardwood, resisting expansion and contraction as humidity changes. The top layer is identical to solid hardwood — same species, same grain, same appearance.

Which Is Right for Your Michigan Home?

Main floor of a Michigan home (above grade)

Either works well

Both solid and engineered perform well on main floors above grade. If you want maximum refinishability and have good humidity control, solid is excellent. If you want wide planks (5"+) or have variable humidity, engineered is the safer choice.

Michigan basement (below grade)

Engineered only

Never install solid hardwood in a Michigan basement. Moisture from the slab will cause cupping, buckling, and mold. Engineered hardwood glued down over a moisture barrier is the correct choice.

Over radiant heat

Engineered only

Radiant heat dries out wood from below, causing excessive shrinkage and gapping in solid hardwood. Most engineered hardwood products are rated for radiant heat — check the manufacturer spec sheet.

New construction (builder grade)

Solid unfinished

For new construction where the floor will be sanded and finished after all other trades are done, solid unfinished hardwood is the most cost-effective choice. We supply builders throughout Michigan with solid unfinished red oak and white oak.

Renovation of occupied home

Prefinished engineered

For occupied homes where disruption must be minimized, prefinished engineered hardwood installs in one day with no sanding or finishing required. Homeowners can move back in immediately.

Wide plank (5"–7"+)

Engineered

Wide solid hardwood planks move significantly with Michigan's humidity swings. Engineered wide plank is dramatically more stable and is available in widths up to 10" from brands like DuChateau, Provenza, and Three Trees.
