White Oak Rift and Quartered grain cut — Indiana Hardwood Specialists

Grain Cuts

Four Ways to Cut the Same Tree

For Red Oak and White Oak, Indiana Hardwood offers four distinct grain cuts — each producing a different visual character and stability profile from the same species.

Plain SawnThe most common cut. May contain any combination of Plain Sawn, Rift Sawn, and Quarter Sawn grain. Widest boards, most character variation, most economical.
Quarter SawnAnnual ring angle 45°–90° to face. At least 50% quartered characteristics — grain lines mostly parallel to length, with medullary ray flecks over 1/16" wide. Distinctive silver ray fleck pattern.
Rift SawnAnnual ring angle 30°–60° to face. At least 75% rift characteristics — tight, straight grain lines parallel to length, ray flecks under 1/16" wide. The most linear, contemporary look.
Rift & QuarteredA combination of Rift Sawn and Quarter Sawn boards in the same bundle. Offers the visual variety of both cuts — popular for wide-plank installations.
