Appalachian forest in Ohio — Sheoga's sustainably managed hardwood source

Environmental Policy

Sustainability in the Appalachian Forest

Sheoga is located in Ohio's Appalachian forest where nearly all of the timber used in production is harvested. The Appalachian forest region comprises 12 states, 344 counties, and more than 65 million acres — recognized for growing the finest quality hardwood found in the world.

USDA Forest Inventory data shows that there are 1.43 trees growing for every tree that is harvested or dies of natural causes across their five primary sourcing states (Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania). The Appalachian forest's timber inventories and acreage have both expanded significantly during the past 50 years.

  • 1.43 trees growing for every 1 harvested
  • Amish suppliers use horses to transport logs — minimizing soil damage and fossil fuel use
  • Air drying before kiln-drying reduces energy use
  • Wood waste boiler heats 117,000 sq. ft. of facility — saving ~250,000 gallons of heating oil/year
  • 220,000 BF-capacity dry kilns powered by sawdust by-product
  • Excess sawdust sold for animal bedding — zero waste
  • CARB II / TSCA Title VI compliant products
