The #1 Custom Hardwood Choice in Michigan
Janka Hardness
1,360
Grain
Tight, straight — minimal pore structure
Natural Color
Light tan to warm beige; accepts stain beautifully
White oak is the undisputed king of custom hardwood flooring in Michigan. Its tight grain accepts stain more evenly than red oak, making it ideal for custom colors from pale natural to deep charcoal. Rift-sawn and quartersawn cuts add architectural character. Wide-plank white oak (5"–10") is the dominant choice in Oakland County luxury new construction and high-end renovations.

Natural Color
Deep chocolate brown to dark espresso
Black walnut is Michigan's premier luxury custom hardwood. Its naturally dark, rich color means it often looks stunning with no stain at all — just a clear natural finish that lets the wood's character shine. Custom walnut flooring is popular in Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, and Grosse Pointe luxury homes where a dramatic, sophisticated floor is the design centerpiece. Engineered walnut is strongly recommended for Michigan's humidity swings.

Michigan's Classic Custom Hardwood
Janka Hardness

Grain
Open, pronounced grain with visible pores
Natural Color
Warm pinkish-red to golden brown
Red oak is the most widely installed custom hardwood in Michigan history — and for good reason. Its open grain accepts stain readily, making it the most versatile species for custom color work. From pale natural to deep ebony, red oak can be stained virtually any color. It is the most affordable custom hardwood option and the best choice for homeowners who want a fully custom stained floor on a budget. Unfinished red oak with a custom DuraSeal stain is a classic Michigan renovation choice.

Michigan's Hardest Domestic Hardwood
Janka Hardness
1,820
Grain
Bold, dramatic variation — light sapwood and dark heartwood
Natural Color
Cream to tan sapwood; reddish-brown heartwood
Hickory is the hardest domestic hardwood available in Michigan — 40% harder than red oak. Its dramatic natural color variation (pale cream sapwood contrasting with dark reddish-brown heartwood) creates a bold, rustic custom floor that is virtually impossible to replicate with any other species. Custom hickory flooring is popular in Michigan lake homes, farmhouses, and high-traffic family homes where durability is the top priority. Note: hickory's bold grain variation means it is best left natural or lightly stained — dark stains can look uneven.

Clean, Contemporary Custom Hardwood
Janka Hardness
1,450
Grain
Fine, consistent grain — minimal pore structure
Natural Color
Creamy white to light golden
Hard maple's fine, consistent grain and light color make it ideal for contemporary and Scandinavian-inspired custom floors. A natural or light stain on maple creates a clean, bright floor that makes rooms feel larger and more open. Maple is also extremely hard — harder than red oak — making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas. Note: maple's dense grain resists stain absorption, so dark stains can look blotchy. Stick to natural, light, or medium tones for best results.

White Oak Alternative with Bold Grain
Janka Hardness
1,320
Grain
Bold, open grain similar to oak but more pronounced
Natural Color
Pale cream to light tan
Ash is having a moment in Michigan custom hardwood flooring. Its bold, open grain is similar to white oak but with more pronounced texture — making it ideal for wire-brushed and whitewashed custom finishes. Ash accepts gray and white stains beautifully, making it a popular choice for Scandinavian and modern industrial interiors. It is also slightly more affordable than white oak, making it an excellent value for custom wide-plank floors.

What Makes It Custom
Custom hardwood flooring is not just about species. Every element of your floor can be specified to your exact requirements.
Standard hardwood comes in 2¼"–3¼" widths. Custom hardwood can be specified from 3" all the way to 12"+ wide plank. Wide-plank flooring (5"+) is the dominant trend in Michigan luxury homes — it shows more of the wood's natural grain and makes rooms feel larger.
Unfinished hardwood can be stained any color — from pale natural to deep ebony. We carry the full Bona and DuraSeal stain lines, plus our installer network can create custom blended colors to match any inspiration photo or design spec.
How a board is cut from the log dramatically affects its appearance and stability. Flat-sawn is most common and most affordable. Rift-sawn produces a straight, consistent grain. Quartersawn produces the distinctive ray fleck pattern in white oak.
The surface texture of your custom floor affects both its appearance and how it hides wear. Smooth is classic. Wire-brushed opens the grain for a textured, aged look. Hand-scraped creates an artisan, hand-crafted appearance.
The finish protects your floor and determines its sheen level. Polyurethane is the most durable. Hardwax oil provides a natural look and is easy to spot-repair. Aluminum oxide (prefinished) is the hardest factory finish available.
Standard straight-lay is most common and most affordable. Herringbone and chevron add architectural drama. Parquet creates geometric patterns. Mixed-width installations use multiple plank widths for a custom, artisan look.
White oak has become the defining flooring choice of Michigan's luxury home market. Its tight, consistent grain accepts stain more evenly than red oak, its neutral color works with virtually any interior palette, and its dimensional stability makes it ideal for Michigan's humidity swings.
At Quality Hardwoods of Michigan, we carry the most comprehensive selection of custom white oak hardwood flooring in Southeast Michigan — from 3" select-grade prefinished to 12" wide-plank rift-sawn unfinished, in solid and engineered construction.
Our white oak custom flooring brands include Sheoga Flooring (Ohio-milled solid white oak), Indiana Hardwood (unfinished solid white oak), Graf Custom Hardwood (custom wide-plank), Preverco (premium engineered white oak), and Mirage Flooring (factory-finished engineered white oak).
