Radiant heat is increasingly popular in Michigan new construction — it provides even, comfortable warmth without the drafts of forced-air systems. But it creates a specific challenge for hardwood flooring: the repeated thermal cycling (heating and cooling) causes wood to expand and contract more than it would with conventional heating. This guide explains exactly what works, what doesn't, and how to get a beautiful hardwood floor over radiant heat that will last for decades.

Why Radiant Heat Is Challenging for Hardwood

Radiant heat systems warm the floor surface directly, which means the wood experiences temperature changes from below. As the heat cycles on and off, the wood expands and contracts repeatedly. Over time, this cycling can cause:

  • Gapping between planks (when the wood contracts as heat cycles off)
  • Cupping (when the bottom of the plank is warmer than the top)
  • Checking (small surface cracks in the wood)
  • Finish cracking or peeling

The key to preventing these problems is choosing a product specifically engineered to handle thermal cycling, and operating the system within the manufacturer's temperature limits.

Solid vs. Engineered Hardwood Over Radiant Heat

Solid Hardwood: Generally Not Recommended

Most hardwood manufacturers do not warranty solid hardwood over radiant heat. The solid wood construction — a single piece of wood — is more susceptible to movement from thermal cycling than engineered construction. Some narrow solid hardwood (under 3") in stable species like maple can work over low-temperature radiant systems, but this is the exception, not the rule.

If you have your heart set on solid hardwood over radiant heat, consult with the manufacturer directly and get the warranty terms in writing before installation.

Engineered Hardwood: The Right Choice

Engineered hardwood is the correct choice for radiant heat applications. The multi-ply plywood core is inherently more dimensionally stable than solid wood — the cross-grain construction of the plies resists movement in all directions. Premium engineered products from Preverco, Mirage, and Lauzon are specifically rated for radiant heat and carry warranty coverage for these applications.

Temperature Requirements

The surface temperature of the floor must not exceed 80–85°F (27–29°C) for most hardwood products. This is the temperature at the floor surface, not the water temperature in the radiant system. Most residential radiant systems operate at 70–80°F surface temperature, which is within the acceptable range.

Critical rules:

  • Never turn the radiant heat on full blast immediately after installation — ramp up gradually over 1–2 weeks
  • Never turn the system off completely in winter — maintain a minimum temperature to prevent the floor from drying out excessively
  • Use a programmable thermostat to avoid large temperature swings
  • Maintain indoor humidity at 35–55% year-round

Best Hardwood Species for Radiant Heat

Some species handle thermal cycling better than others:

  • White oak: Excellent — naturally more stable than red oak, good moisture resistance
  • Hard maple: Very good — tight grain and high density resist movement
  • Hickory: Good — very hard, handles temperature changes well
  • Red oak: Acceptable — slightly more movement than white oak but widely used over radiant heat
  • Walnut: Use with caution — softer species with more movement; narrower planks recommended

Plank width: Narrower planks (under 5") handle thermal movement better than wide plank. If you want wide plank over radiant heat, choose a premium engineered product with a thick wear layer and follow the manufacturer's guidelines precisely.

Installation Requirements

Installing hardwood over radiant heat requires additional steps beyond standard installation:

  • Turn off the radiant heat 24–48 hours before delivery to allow the subfloor to reach room temperature
  • Acclimate the flooring for 5–7 days with the heat off (or at minimum temperature)
  • Use a floating installation method or glue-down — nail-down is not recommended over radiant heat systems embedded in concrete
  • Leave proper expansion gaps at all walls and transitions
  • After installation, gradually increase heat over 1–2 weeks
