8 Questions to Ask Every Contractor
"Are you licensed and insured in Michigan?"
Why it matters: Michigan requires flooring contractors to carry general liability insurance. An uninsured contractor leaves you liable for accidents on your property.
"How many years have you been installing hardwood floors?"
Why it matters: Hardwood installation is a skilled trade. Look for at least 5 years of experience specifically with hardwood — not just general flooring.
"Can you provide 3 references from Michigan homeowners?"
Why it matters: Call the references. Ask specifically about dust control, cleanup, timeline, and whether they would hire the contractor again.
"What brand of abrasives and finishes do you use?"
Why it matters: Professional contractors use professional products. Norton abrasives, Fabulon, Basic Coatings, or Bona finishes are good signs. "I use whatever is cheapest" is a red flag.
"How do you handle dust containment?"
Why it matters: Sanding generates enormous amounts of fine dust. Professional contractors use dustless sanding systems or seal off the work area. Ask to see their dust containment setup.
"What is your process for moisture testing before installation?"
Why it matters: Michigan homes can have elevated subfloor moisture. A contractor who skips moisture testing is cutting corners that will cost you later.
"Do you acclimate the flooring before installation?"
Why it matters: Hardwood must acclimate to your home's humidity for 5–7 days before installation. Contractors who skip this step risk cupping and gapping.
"What is included in your quote — and what is not?"
Why it matters: Get a detailed written quote. Confirm whether it includes: furniture moving, subfloor prep, stain, number of finish coats, cleanup, and disposal of old flooring.
