Waterproof describes how the product surface responds to water; it does not make a slab, subfloor, perimeter wall, or installation seam dry. Moisture can become trapped beneath a floating floor after a leak, flood, vapor transmission through concrete, or repeated humidity exposure.
Michigan basements and on-grade concrete can carry seasonal moisture pressure. A basement that feels dry can still need a documented subfloor-moisture evaluation before new flooring is installed. Humidity, groundwater movement, plumbing leaks, and an unsealed slab each call for a different remedy.
Look for a persistent musty odor, cupping or movement at plank edges, dark staining at transitions, recurring dampness, or a history of leaks. Mold is often not visible until flooring is lifted, so smell and moisture clues matter.
